A-hem hem: If you visit the pages these are from, the rest of each movie is available on the side in numerical order. There are probably more movies available if you search...

Yeah, I embarrassingly haven't seen Streetcar but On the Waterfront rules all over the place. I did some quick wikipediaing and found that another of Kazan's films won multiple Oscars (three, compared to Waterfront's and Streetcar's eight and four, respectively) was Gentleman's Agreement (1947) which is a " drama film about a journalist (played by Gregory Peck) who goes undercover as a Jew to research antisemitism in New York City and the affluent community of Darien, Connecticut." Seems prety badass. Also, he directed East of Eden which was James Dean's breakout film and has a long career of not only directing films but producing film and theatre as well as writing plays and novels. Check this guy out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elia_Kazanen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentleman%27s_Agreementen.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_of_Eden_(1955_film)Also: Nice find, Beatrice!

I never heard of any of those other films. I'd like to check them out. Any one like the Film Forum? They're playing Kazan's Baby Doll in December. Two of the co-stars will be there too. www.filmforum.org/films/babydoll.htmlI never heard of this one either. It was made in between East of Eden and A Face in the Crowd.

Hah! I just sat down to have some quality time with my dad and "A Face in the Crowd" happened to be on! Shockingly relevant to the 2008 presidential election. Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes = Sarah "Moron" Palin
Um. I have also seen East of Eden which kicks butt. I would highly recommend the Steinbeck novel on which it is based!!
Looking fwd. to the Cassavetes film this Thurs... I'm bringing a pillow. Those chairs are awful.

Shoulda sat on one of the couches! I thought that was a great idea. Much more comfortable!
Speaking of the screening, I thought it went pretty well for our first real event, though I can't help but wish for a spookier movie. Today I saw "Carnival of Souls" and that movie creeped me out real good. I jumped and even screamed a bunch of times. Very good movie!

A Streetcar Named Desire will be on TCM this Friday, the 7th, at 11PM!
They play a lot of great stuff on that station.
Yesterday I saw My Name Is Bruce at the Sunshine Theater. The film was funny but what was even better was seeing Bruce Campbell in person. He had the best Q&A I've ever seen, truely halarious.

I saw Curious Button today for the second time this winter. I really want to watch Slumdog Millionaire (along with every other film nominated for an Oscar that I haven't seen yet), but I doubt I'm going to get the chance with school coming up soon. Unless tomorrow...

I have to be honest. I am not hopping on the Benjamin Button Bandwagon!
I liked MILK
and DEFIANCE! Slumdog was ok.
I want to see DOUBT and am pissed Synecdoche, NY didn't get any nominations. Oscars shmoscars.

I saw Slumdog yesterday and I liked it, but I'll have to watch it again from a better seat (as in, not the front row). I want to watch Revolutionary Road and Milk next (hopefully during the week when BAM gives students discounts) and I wanted to watch Doubt, but I don't know if it's still playing in theaters. I don't know how much I want to see Defiance, though it does strike me as interesting that Daniel Craig is playing a Jew again.

Just saw Revolutionary Road. SAVE ME! Perhaps the most melodramatic movie ever! It's ok, but at least Kate Winslet turns out a decent performance (can't say much for Mr. Leo Dio Cap-arito). My suggestion, If you've already seen: Dark Knight, Curious Case, Slumdog, Defiance, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, The Wrestler, Milk, Wall-E, and even Doubt, then see this movie. Otherwise, see one of the aforementioned ones first.

I've seen a bunch of movies recently. So let's discuss.
- The Wrestler: a cool movie, not very complex, but well done. I enjoyed it a lot. And the whole cast is awesome.
- The Reader: well done, but I thought the story line was only okay.
- Slumdog Millionaire: awesome, a little predictable(generally speaking) but worthy of all the praise its getting.
- Doubt: a good movie, not great. But what I really appreciated was that after leaving the theater my friends and I came away with completely different interpretations of the movie. The movie focuses more on personal character and less on the actual story line, which is not that original, but leaves much open to interpretation.
- Synecdoche New York: my favorite of the above list. I really like Kaufman movies. I love the out of whack chronology and bits of fantasy that are common in his films. And this one is strange and depressing and great!
I also saw Unbreakable recently. I've seen most of Shyamalan's films and I'm not a big fan. But I had not seen this one, which most people seem to think is his best. And I have to agree. I thought it was a good movie, a really cool take on the 'superhero' and on the superhero villain relationship.
Thoughts?

If you haven't already done so I highly recommend you seeing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It is a wonderful movie. Very funny, very deep, and it really stays with you long after it's over. It's a long movie but it is WELL worth the time spent!

Silent Light at film forum last month was a highlight for me. if it pops back up in theaters i highly recommend it. i'm looking forward to other carlos reygadas movies. does anyone have any suggestions?
i won't say too much about this movie, unless others have already seen it, but i will mention that the cinematography is fucking mind blowing. the film won a bunch of awards across the world, but was, of course, not nominated for any oscars. whatever. check this movie out, esp, if you are into tarkovsky, malick, etc...
also, it's in plautdietsch, which you don't hear everyday. the more i think about this movie, the more highly i recommend it. i have to go, but i'll continue this post tomorrow...
