hi all,
as many of you know, we at brooklyn college have hundreds of celluloid prints. i've only had the opportunity to look at them once (they are in the equipment room), but as far as i can see, there is not one loser in the bunch. a small sampling of what we have:
bunuel's Viridiana; apocalypse now; man with a movie camera; potemkin; persona; hundreds more, though i can't remember all of them now. point is, we have prints that people would kill and die for. yet, we have not utilized this gift. let us not speculate on why this is so, but let's move forward and see what we can do to make sure that these films are enjoyed and appreciated.
the bad news: the prints have not been archived properly, and as a result, some are damaged. to what extent? no one knows. our first job would be to figure out what we have. many will not be in good condition, but they are worth our time regardless.
personally, i don't know much about restoration of prints. as far as i know, there is not much than can be done. generally restorations take place at the negative level. however, there are a few things we CAN do. for one, we can add dexterity to the prints so that they can at least be projected without breaking.
it should be a lot of fun to go through these prints. maybe many are in great condition. we can at least take good care of those for future generations.
a lot of work is ahead of us, but it should be fun, and a great learning experience. we will also learn how to project the films. all great fun and rewarding, too.
WHO IS INTERESTED IN THIS PROJECT? YOU CAN POST OR EMAIL OR SEND A MESSAGE OR CALL ME. 347-698-1308
this wouldn't be a full time job or anything. we just need to see who is interested, and we need to get this ball rolling. anyone with experience in this field, or any suggestions, please speak up.
thank you and looking forward to working with you all.
