Hi dudes Some of you probably know about this but I figured I would let THE BOARD know about the little festival I am involved with... This past summer some friends and I put together an outdoor Super 8 film festival on the Greek island of Santorini. Basically we borrowed/bought 6 projectors, scattered them around this little village, gave passers-by maps to follow and projected films onto the white-washed buildings. We had about 40 shorts from all over the world (Australia, Spain, France, Germany, the States, etc.) The festival ran for three successful nights in June! Sadly we only had a couple of Brooklyn College films! Granted most of us are out of 40.1-- it still would be great if you kids could enter a reel or two into THIS summer's festival! It's not till July and the cut off date won't be till late March but I just wanted to throw this opportunity out there to see if anyone was interested! Films should be submitted on film.. no DVDs. Strictly Super 8!! There are no genre restrictions-- anything goes. Must be under 10 minutes. Pictures/details from the first annual Festival Detours can be found at: www.festivaldetours.orgFeel free to ask me any questions you may have regarding the fest. I'd love to see some BC films flickering on the walls of Oia this summer! Thanks a lot, Madeleine Ranges P.S. I'll be posting more about this as the entry cut off date approaches..

Sounds exciting, but dang... Greece? That's got to be expensive!

Yeaaaaah but I save my pennies and I manage. I sleep/eat/work in my cousin's bookshop so that saves me some money while i'm out there..... atlantisbooks.org ! check it outt. but yeh. pricey.

Well, that's convenient! Just goes to show you how important connections are. :-P
But yeah, do you know if there are other businesses that are willing to put up temp jobs for other participants in the festival? That would be really useful for other po' students that are interested in it.

Nah the rest of the shops are like.. overpriced jewelry stores and postcard shops. Mad europeans vacation in the greek isles in July/Aug. I don't get paid at the bookshop.. it is a commune type setup... save for a small stipend for meager food rations! Plenty of books though! Anyway I just work my butt off and save up to enjoy a month in Greece. If I could I'd fly all you lovely people out to tiny sunset cliff town Oia (EE-ah) and give you beds amongst the books! If only!
I want more BC super 8 films though. I'ma bug the 40.1 kids. Fresh meat.

There's been some talk about having a super 8 festival, or at least a screening, at the school. I think this would be pretty cool and the Film Society could pull it off.
Agree/Disagree. Discuss.

AGREE! I would definitely be wiling to help out.. let the brainstorming begin!!
Who? BCFS/Film Dept Community
When? Spring 2009? Multiple days or just one night? How bout just one night..
What? Student shorts.. we should get professors to make some too. I'd kill to see a Hornsby short. Would there be a theme to the festival? a prompt? to create a cohesive collection of films? or... just anything goes? With the film fest I help out with we accept any and everything. The only ones we didn't end up showing this past year were the dirty flicks (we can't very well project smut on the side of a church. The greeks would run us out of town.) We had a private post-festival screening of the more risque shorts!
Plenty of projectors.. yeh? That shouldn't be a problem. It's always nice to have back-ups.
Entry forms? Yay, nay?
Where? Obv. in the film dept.. but just one screen? multiple screens? We could easily take over the editing lab and a couple of classrooms..set up chairs..? popcorn? Maybe just one screen would suffice. Kind of depends on how many films are received.
I think a major goal would be to spend the least amount of money possible and milk the film dept for equipment and whatnot.
Enough with the socratic questioning. I wasn't aware that this was something that was being discussed...
If this happens I'm going to have to kidnap the films and show em in Greece.

madeleine

What if I shoot something new? I have an old roll of Super 8 and a camera at home, so I could whip up something quick and fun.
